Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate Black Series

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

We’ve got another interesting rendering to share with you this evening. The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate Black Series isn’t expected anytime soon but that hasn’t stopped Khalil Bouguerra of Virtuel-Car from attaching Black Series trademark looks to the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate.

It gets wider body work including new fender extensions, side skirts, front fender and rear bumper air vents and a rear diffuser. The car also sits visably closer to the ground which will surely help handling and aerodynamics.

As for the mechanicals that could underpin a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate Black Series, we need look no further than the recent C63 AMG Black Series. Currently the E63 AMG Estate features a 6.2 liter V8 engine with 525hp. The C63 AMG Black Series had a 30hp upgrade so we’d expect the same treatment for an E63 AMG Black Series. A total of 555hp could be the total figure, together with a range of handling and interior upgrades.

What’s more likely is a Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Black Series, although now that we have the C63 AMG Black Series that doesn’t look likely.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG

2012 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG

Let’s just cut straight to the chase. This deceptively demure execu-coupe weighs more than 4800 pounds and can sprint to 60 mph in four seconds. That would be four seconds flat.

The CL63 AMG enters triple-digit speeds in 8.8 seconds, trips the quarter-mile lights in 12.3 at 121 mph, attains 150 mph in less than 20, and maxes out at 190 mph, whereupon its governor says “Das ist genug.”

That’s one governor we’re inclined to agree with, particularly on U.S. highways. You may be able to find places where you deem 190 mph to be reasonable and prudent, particularly in this car, but you’re not likely to find anyone wearing a badge who’ll agree with you.

Primal Power

The source of the CL63’s green-light zeal is AMG’s new twin-turbo, 32-valve direct-injection aluminum V-8. It replaces the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 last seen in the 2010 model, which made 518 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The turbo engine leaves the AMG works in Affalterbach, Germany, with a horsepower rating no lower than 536 (at 5500 rpm), and torque of 590 lb-ft, on tap from 2000 to 4500 rpm.

Formidable, but not quite enough to produce acceleration at the threshold of the supercar gate. That level comes with the $7300 AMG Performance package—our vehicle was so equipped—which alters engine mapping, increases max boost from 14.2 psi to 15.6, and adds a snappy carbon-fiber engine cover. The carbon fiber probably doesn’t contribute much to engine output, but the net of the other two tweaks is 563 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque.

The power comes on with an addictive hydraulic rush, no waiting, and the seven-speed automatic transmission makes the most of it. Using the paddle shifters abets savoring this cornucopia of thrust. The shifts are prompt enough, though not on par with those of dual-clutch ’boxes. But there’s such a surplus of torque, and the transmission’s responses in pure automatic modes are so seamless, that simply operating in drive is thoroughly satisfying.

We should note that for really serious torque junkies, with really deep pockets, there’s yet another CL in the lineup that may have even more appeal. The CL65 AMG is propelled by a 6.0-liter SOHC 36-valve twin-turbo V-12 developing 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. If that’s not enough, you probably need therapy.

Mass and Dynamics

For all its face-distorting thrust, the CL’s really amazing attribute is how adroitly it handles a sinuous stretch of back road. Transient responses belie the big coupe’s substantial mass, and the word “agile” keeps inserting itself into the driver’s mind, making it hard to believe he’s herding almost 2.5 tons of sophisticated machinery.

Cornering attitudes are remarkably flat, information from the speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering system is abundant, and—for all its roll stiffness—the CL never punishes its occupants, even on the wartiest pavement. Credit the Mercedes Active Body Control active suspension here, as well as the CL’s standard torque-vectoring feature. Baked into the stability-control system, this electronic torque distributor applies selective braking to the inside rear wheel during hard cornering to enhance turn-in. It’s basically undetectable, but the results are hard to criticize.

2012 Hyundai i-ioniq Concept

2012 Hyundai i-ioniq Concept

The 2012 Hyundai i-ioniq Concept was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. This car is an electric sports hatchback with a range extending petrol engine that works similar to the Chevrolet Volt system. This car was designed, developed and built by Hyundai’s European R&D center in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

Hyundai showcases their future design direction with this concept as well as advanced technology. The roof has a unique design that Hyundai calls the “penthouse roof” which is like a panoramic style. The scissor doors and LED headlights are nice design touches. Maybe we will see some of this design in the next generation of the Veloster.

Performance

The Hyundai i-ioniq Concept is powered by a 1.0L 3-cylinder engine that produces 60 horsepower. This engine is mated to a 107 horsepower lithium-ion electric motor which is powered by a 74 horsepower generator via a single speed transmission. In all-electric mode the i-ioniq can travel 74 miles and up to 435 miles with assistance from the gasoline engine. This concept has a top speed of 90 mph.

Toyota Corolla Diesel

Toyota Corolla Diesel

Diesel, for some car manufactures it’s simply a dirty word. Toyota is realizing that competitors are having no problem selling diesel powered automobiles in some markets such as India and Europe. Toyota has responded by putting a small diesel engine in the best selling car in the world, the Corolla. Could a diesel powered version of the best selling Corolla make it to the United States? The tenth generation of the Toyota Corolla (E140) is a world car that is produced in 19 cities all across the globe. This is the most refined Corolla yet and is offered with nine gasoline engine and one diesel engine. Reception has been mixed for this new model. Some media outlets have critisised the styling to similar to the previous model Corolla while others have praised the styling.

Toyota ND

The Toyota ND is a small inline four-cylinder turbocharged diesel that produces 90 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and 140 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 to 3,000 rpm. Combined fuel consumption is 58.8 mpg which would be great for the North American market. This engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The only down side to this engine is some people have said it is slightly underpowered for the Corolla. Perhaps if Toyota prepared a diesel Corolla for the United States it would be fitted with a 2.0L unit rather than the 1.4L.

I’m interested in what people think about this subject. Do you think that a small affordable diesel version of the Toyota Corolla could be a success in the North American market? I think that the Toyota Corolla Diesel would do well here in the United States. With fuel prices continually rising, 58.8 combined mpg sure sounds good.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is 461bhp version of Jeep's famous off-roader, powered by a huge 6.4-litre V8.

Performance is impressive for a car this size, with 0-62mph taking just 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 158mph.

That puts the Jeep on a par with the £84,790 Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

The SRT goes on sale across Europe early next year.

Despite that kind of performance, fuel economy is better than you might expect thanks to a cylinder deactivation system that shuts down half the pistons under light engine loads.

Only one trim level is available and equipment will include sat-nav, a twin sunroof, adaptive cruise control and active dampers. Sports seats also feature, while on the outside, lowered suspension and LED daytime running lights mark out the SRT from lesser models in the range.

2012 BMW Concept M135i

2012 BMW Concept M135i

AUTO SHOWS: It appears the rumors were true: BMW's M division has had its way with the latest Euro-spec 1 Series hatchback. The result is called the M135i, and it'll make its official debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, albeit in a so-called "concept" form.

Despite that pesky concept term, we wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this is virtually identical to a production-spec M135i we've been hearing about for some time. Certainly, the car looks production ready: most of the exterior revisions fall in line with similar packages launched as part of the M Performance Automobiles collection. Exterior revisions include a new front fascia and added enlarged air intakes, a sportier looking rear fascia with a cutout for dual exhaust tips, and striking M-design 18-inch alloy wheels.
Tri-color stripes, which match M's distinctive logo, are applied to both the bodyside character lines and the rear liftgate.

BMW assures us this 1 Series isn't all show and no go. Mechanical revisions reportedly include both upgraded brakes and a firmer, M-tuned suspension package - but from there, things get a little sketchy. BMW's release says only that the M135i will boast a "straight six-cylinder...featuring M Performance Twin Power Turbo technology" and an output of more than 300 hp. Early reports suggested the car would use a tweaked version of the 1M's N54 twin-turbo engine, but BMW has confirmed that the car will be powered by a version of the new N55 3.0-liter I-6 , which uses a single twin-scroll turbocharger.

This 1 Series will be the first gasoline-powered addition to the BMW M Performance Automobiles collection, which presently consists of the M550d xDrive, and the X5 and X6 M50d models - all of which are powered by diesel engines.

Sound nifty? Sadly, the M135i as you see it here isn't coming to North America, largely because the F20 1 Series hatchback isn't in BMW North America's product plans. That said, coupe and convertible models based off this architecture almost certainly are, and officials have hinted that the 1 Series would seem like it would work with the new M Performance group. Here's hoping it does - and that some of this package manages to work its way stateside at some point.

The Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG

Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG

It seems that there are so many sports cars coming onto the market that we as individuals are having to turn to websites (such as this) just to keep up. Trust me when I say that I love it. The reason being is that when oil prices ran rampant in 07-08 I was fully expecting a drop off in performance models of all sizes. Today we see that the year of the driver is about to be upon us as manufacturers all over the world are focusing on a few performance models in their lineup. So we have much to look forward too. By the looks of it the Mercedes A45 AMG will certainly be a pick for fast-ass-hatch.

Mercedes has one hell of a performance team at AMG that can bring many smiles to us boys and girl. The AMG performance division will be massaging some pony power from a turbo 2.0L that will be connected to either a 6-speed manual or dual clutch 7-speed auto. Then power is placed to an AWD 4matic system in order to launch this car. What is interesting is that speculations for hp from this 2.0l are hitting numbers like 329hp. If this is the case then expect a very low 5 sec 0-60 and a 13 sec ¼ mile.

Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG

This car could simply be the vehicle for individuals that couldn’t get their hands on a BMW 1M. The price for this car will probably start in the high $30’s if not low $40’s because it’s Mercedes Benz and AMG and that equals expensive. If it is too expensive then get the VW Golf-R that starts at 33k or especially the WRX STI. But look for some impressive numbers to be had if MB AMG sticks to their guns and delivers some potent power from an A-Class 2.0L.

2012 Kia Cee'd Hatchback

2012 Kia Cee'd Hatchback

AUTO SHOWS: The first-generation Kia Cee'd ushered in a new design language for Kia in Europe, and it looks as if history is about to repeat itself. The next-generation Cee'd, which is slated to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, appears to push the design envelope even further.

The latest Cee'd - which is likely to remain a European exclusive - remains a hatchback, but shares only its daylight opening shape with its forebear. The new Cee'd packs plenty of Kia's latest design DNA into a compact vehicle: the corporate "tiger nose" grille is more prominent than ever, and flanked by long, tapered headlamps and a dramatically flared hood. As usual, the car also receives LED running lamps placed along the lower edges of the headlamp housings.

Further back, the new Cee'd shares a number of cues with the smaller Rio: taillights are mounted high up the curvaceous rear end, although the bumper cut echoes the shape of the hatch stamping itself. The lower diffuser is also a little more sophisticated, with raised accents surrounding the rear reflectors, license plate, and lower diffuser.

Inside, the interior is anything but drab. Like the Optima, the Cee'd's instrument panel wraps into the center stack. Grey plastic materials used on the dashboard itself are broken up with strips of glossy piano black trim. Door panels are two-toned, and the leather seats shown here feature contrast stitching. The look is refreshingly high-end - which is welcome, considering the C-segment continues to move upmarket in around the globe.

As for the mechanicals, it's still anyone's guess: Kia has been tight-lipped about the car's selection of engines. Currently, European models feature a range of gasoline and diesel engines that make anywhere between 89 and 126 horsepower, but it's been rumored that the Procee'd, the three-door version of the Cee'd, could make use of the the same 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine used in the new Hyundai Veloster Turbo.

Also unknown at the moment is whether or not this car will make it to the United States. We wouldn't be surprised if it didn't: after all, the previous Cee'd was designed expressly for the European market, which left North America with the Forte. We may not see a Cee'd on our shores, but we can only hope the next Kia C-segment offering for North America looks this good.

Infiniti LE Concept

Infiniti LE Concept

AUTO SHOWS: Nissan paved the way for mass-market electric cars with the Leaf hatchback, and now luxury division Infiniti will launch a more powerful and more refined electric sedan based on the Leaf. Shown in concept form at the 2012 New York auto show, the Infiniti LE closely foreshadows a production electric car.

The heart of the LE concept is a 100-kW electric motor rated for 134 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. It's a stronger motor than in the Nissan Leaf (107 hp and 207 lb-ft) to give the Infiniti electric stronger acceleration. A 24-kWh lithium-ion battery mounted below the passenger compartment is said to provide a driving range of about 100 miles per charge.

Though its wheelbase is identical to that of the Nissan Leaf, the LE's overall length of 186.4 inches is 9.4 inches greater than that of the Leaf. In fact, the LE is only 1.5 inches shorter than an Infiniti G37 sedan. The bodywork befits a concept car, as it's covered in sinewy and rippling creases. Aerodynamic 19-inch wheels, a sloping roofline, LED lights, and a stubby trunk all add up to a slippery drag coefficient of 0.25, which beats the 0.29 Cd of the Leaf. The charging port is hidden beneath the Infiniti logo in the front grille, and there is blue LED illumination for the car's underbody.

"Rather than taking an electric vehicle and adding an Infiniti badge, we are taking an Infiniti and removing the tailpipe," says Infiniti Americas vice president Ben Poore.

Beneath the rear diffuser is an inductive wireless charge unit, which allows the LE concept to be recharged simply by parking it over a wireless charge point that can be installed in a garage floor. To make the process even simpler, the concept car has a self-park system that automatically positions the car above the charge point. Using the electric power steering and 360-degree Around View camera, Intelligent Park Assist can drive itself toward the charger as soon as the car enters a parking garage.

"On top of no longer having to pump gas, you will no longer have to connect charging cables," says Poore.

The interior blends luxury touches with futuristic touches; blue LEDs illuminate the cabin, and the dashboard has a pair of large touch-screen interfaces that allow occupants to find charging stations, calculate driving range, and more. The seats and door trim were inspired by the collars of Japanese kimonos, while the center console has a ripple surface. The seat fabric is a mix of mesh and leather, with a combination of purple and white. As in the Nissan Leaf, the transmission selector is a palm-shaped sculpted knob.

Despite the electric drivetrain, Infiniti asserts that the LE concept will be as quiet as a luxury car, and will provide entertaining handling. Moreover, the instant torque of an electric motor and single-speed transmission are said to provide smooth and instant acceleration.

The LE is not merely a fanciful concept, as Infiniti plans to put the car into production within the next one or two years; the company said in September 2011 that it would launch an electric car by 2014.

Infiniti Emerg-E Concept

Infiniti Emerg-E Concept

AUTO SHOWS: The latest car to be leaked ahead of its Geneva Motor Show debut is the Infiniti Emerg-E concept. The electric sports car was previously revealed by leaked renderings (shown in the gallery below) released online two weeks ago.

The leaked photos of the Emerg-E concept show a low and wide sports car that bears a resemblance to supercars like the new McLaren MP4-12C and the Acura NSX concept. The front fascia wears the same polygonal grille that graces other new Infiniti products, the rear has a subtle spoiler and a large lower diffuser, while the roof has a large panoramic glass sunroof. Interior photos reveal a driver-focused cabin with a tall center console and sporty three-spoke steering wheel.

The crux of the Infiniti Emerg-E concept will be a mid-mounted, extended-range electric drivetrain. As in cars like the Chevrolet Volt, drivers will use electric power until the battery is depleted, then a gasoline engine kicks in to help provide extra juice so the Emerg-E can drive farther. We believe the electric drivetrain will be cribbed from the Nissan Leaf, comprising a lithium-ion battery pack and an 80-kW electric motor. The range extender will likely be a 1.2-liter gas engine, and is mid-mounted so the Infiniti Emerg-E is balanced for better handling.

In the past, Nissan executives have called the Emerg-E concept, "our vision for a totally new kind of inspired premium performance car... The natural next step was to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect." If the eco-friendly sports car is green-lit for production, it probably won't debut until 2014 at the earliest
