Jaguar F-Type R V-8, Track-Ready XKR-S Caught Lapping the ‘Ring

If the Jaguar F-Type with a supercharged V-6 doesn’t tickle your fancy, then perhaps spy shots from the Nürburgring of what appears to be the Jaguar F-Type R – with a V-8 engine under the hood – will be more your speed. Our spy photographers also snapped photos of a more aggressive-looking XKR-S testing, possibly previewing a track-ready variant of the already entertaining Jaguar XKR-S.

Caught playing on the track is what could be the V-8 powered Jaguar F-Type, sporting quad exhausts. Jaguar confirmed a punchier 5.0-liter V-8 would find its way under the F-Type’s hood alongside the new 3.0-liter V-6 engine. Specifics weren’t revealed, but based on the power ratings of existing Jaguar V-8 models, an F-Type V-8, which could get an “R” moniker, could put out anywhere from 400 hp to more than 500 hp. The normal six-cylinder is expected to be available in 340- and 380-hp variants while a turbocharged four-cylinder model is a possibility, as well.

The visual changes on the XKR-S are quite obvious. Just take a look at the canards mounted on the front bumper and the massive rear wing. The prototype also appears to have a different engine hood with additional air vents, bucket seats up front, and a lack of rear seats, leading us to believe this isn’t your average XKR-S. We also suspect more power will complete the car’s track readiness, and the air vents on the new hood design indicate that a revised engine may be on the way.

Jaguar is clearly stepping up its game with the F-Type, and an F-Type R could spice things up in the sub-$100,000 high-performance roadster segment. But do you think Jaguar also needs a track edition of the XKR-S? Let us know in the comments section after listening to the F-Type’s supercharged V-6 in the video below.

2013 Buick Verano Turbo’s 250HP

2013 Buick Verano Turbo’s 250HP

No one suspects that General Motor will unveil the new model of the Buick Verano so early. Yet, the fact says that yesterday GM has already made a surprising presentation of the Verano which not only brings more powerful turbocharged engine but also presents a manual transmission for the buyers as optional feature on the car for the very first time.

From the outside, the new 2013 Buick Verano appears identical to the regular 180 hp Verano except its T logo, the dual exhaust outlets and a hardly visible decklid spoiler. In case of performance, compared to the 270 horses Regal GS, the Verano is indeed faster.

The top model in the Buick Verano range will be empowered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine combined with a direct injection and continuously variable valve timing that helps the unit to deliver a total output of 250 horses at 5,300 rpm and 260 lb- ft or equal to 353 Nm of peak torque at 2000 rpm. The company claimed that nearly almost 90 per cent of the Verano Turbo’s peak torque is reached between 1,700 rpm to about 5,500 rpm.

The company also stated that to sprint form standstill to 60 rpm, the new Buick Verano Turbo needs 6.2 seconds sprint time. It means that the new Verano Turbo is faster by half a second compared to that of the 270 horses Buick Regal GS. The 2.0 liter unit is coupled to either a six- speed automatic transmission or a six speed manual gearbox.

Unfortunately, the company has not said a single word yet about the fuel economy numbers will be figured by the new Verano Turbo yet. However, General Motor stated that the Verano Turbo is predicted to figure the same fuel economy as other Buick’s turbocharged models.

So far, GM is also still sealing its lips about the pricing of the new Buick Verano Turbo. However it may be unveiled closer to the production date in late 2012, so stay tune.

2012 Seat Toledo Compact Sedan

Actually, we just need to wait a little longer to see the 2012 Seat Toledo compact sedan having its debut in production model. However, the folk over the Seat Fans Club has already spread the very first official images of the Spanish twin version of the Czech Skoda Rapid sedan.

Compared to the previously teased near- production Seat Teledo Concept that had been showed on March at the Geneva Motor Show, the new Seat Toledo production model is just distinguished by the replacement of the upscale trim pieces from the study’s exterior and interior such as the grille surround, large alloy wheels and flat bottom steering wheel completed with more conventional pieces.

Based on the information we got from an online automotive magazine, the company will most likely debut the car in Europe. In the launch, the vehicle is expected to be available with a choice of four petrol engines.

Those are a gutless 1.2-liter three-cylinder unit that is good for delivering a total output of 74hp nearly 75PS and 84hp or roughly 85PS, a more powerful engine is a 1.2-liter TSI turbo that is able to churn a healthy output of 104hp or 105PS and the last is a 1.4-liter TSI turbo producing output of 120hp, around 122PS.

While, the company is also planning for providing diesel range as well, including a 1.6-liter TDI CR with 104hp (105PS). Further, the company will offer a 1.6-liter TDI CR with 89hp (90PS) of power by the 2013.

Either manual gearboxe and a DGS dual- clutch transmission are both can be fitted on the new Toledo compact sedan. Just the same with its Skoda Rapid twin, it is said that the Paris Motor Show that will be held this fall will be the perfect place for the Seat Toledo to have its first public appearance. Following the launch, the car will immediately have arrived on sale.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

AUTO SHOWS: Though it may look like a hot hatch, the Hyundai Veloster lacked the power needed to live up to that billing. But that might change. Hyundai unveiled the 2013 Veloster Turbo at the North American International Auto Show, with 63 more horsepower and 72 more lb-ft than the non-turbo and a few exterior tweaks that could make the Veloster Turbo eligible for a spot in the hot hatch pantheon.

On the outside, a few cosmetic enhancements give the already showy Veloster an even more rambunctious presence. The Veloster Turbo maintains the standard model's 104.3-inch wheelbase but grows 1.2 inches in length, and adds 0.6 inch in width. Gone is the standard Veloster's bucktoothed front end, replaced by a wide-open, hexagonal grille flanked by small, round foglights. The Veloster Turbo also gets a unique rear valance with a diffuser and new dual round-tip center exhaust setup. Turbo-specific side skirts and 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 215/40R18 tires contribute to the Veloster Turbo's tuner-inspired look. Two exclusive Turbo colors are Endurance Gray and Matte Gray, Hyundai's first-ever matte paint. In addition, the Turbo model can be had in Elite White, Kona Orange, and Hydrate Blue, the three new colors available for all 2013 Velosters.

Obviously, the biggest change is the addition of a turbocharger. Unlike a do-it-yourself turbo kit, the Veloster Turbo's forced induction system is engineered for both power and efficiency. The turbocharged, direct-injected 1.6-liter I-4 produces 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, up 63 hp and 72 lb-ft from the standard Veloster's non-turbo 1.6-liter. The turbo's exhaust manifold and turbine housing are integrated into a single stainless steel piece -- much like the unit found on the Sonata Turbo's turbocharged 2.0-liter.

Hyundai say the turbocharger uses exhaust energy more efficiently thanks to its twin-scroll, split-inlet turbine housing design. Boost pressure is controlled by an electronic wastegate that provides a maximum of 18 psi when the spurs are put to it and opens up completely when the turbo isn't needed, further improving efficiency. Hyundai says the manual-equipped Veloster Turbo will achieve an estimated 27 mpg in the city, and 38 mpg on the highway. Figures for automatic models have yet to be determined.

In true sporty car fashion, a six-speed manual transmission comes standard, with a wider gear ratio spread compared to the non-turbo car to make better use of the increased power and torque. A six-speed automatic is also offered, and comes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. This unit was developed in-house at Hyundai, and features a slightly narrower gear spread compared to the standard model's dual-clutch Ecoshift DCT transmission, a feature that helps keep the car's turbocharged engine in its power band when changing gears.

Hyundai names the Volkswagen GTI, Honda Civic Si, and Mini Cooper S (and Clubman S) as the Veloster Turbo's main competitors, and claims its car has a better power-to-weight ratio than all of them. At 2800 pounds, the Veloster Turbo is 77 pounds lighter than the Civic Si and 234 pounds lighter than VW's GTI, according to Hyundai. This weight advantage could give the Veloster Turbo an edge in the performance department.

Apart from the increased power, the only other major performance upgrade is the steering - another area that we've found lacking on the base car. There's a quick-ratio steering rack with revised steering calibration meant to deliver better feedback and control. As with the standard Veloster, electric power steering is used on the turbo model for adjustability and fuel savings over a conventional hydraulic power steering system. The Veloster Turbo's suspension is mostly carryover from the standard model. Like all Velosters, it gets a McPherson strut front suspension with coil springs, gas shocks, and a 24mm front sway bar. The rear end gets the same V-torsion beam setup found on the standard model, complete with integrated 23mm rear stabilizer bar and monotube shocks.

Inside, the Veloster Turbo gets full leather seats with the word "Turbo" emblazoned on the seatbacks. The car also gets an exclusive Supervision Cluster that uses two TFT screens between the tachometer and speedometer to relay important info to the driver. Heated front seats are standard, along with a pushbutton start and alloy pedals. As with the standard model, the Veloster Turbo gets a standard 7-inch multifunction touch-screen display. The system has Pandora Internet radio capability, and can stream music from an iPhone to the Veloster Turbo's 450-watt, eight-speaker Dimension audio system with an 8inch subwoofer and iPod, USB, and auxiliary inputs. Bluetooth audio streaming is also standard, along with a hands-free phone system. Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system will also be offered, with features like voice-to-text messaging, Automatic Crash Notification, and SOS Emergency Assistance.

Vauxhall Astra VXR

Vauxhall Astra VXR

The performance hatchback arena has never been more tightly packed or hotly contested. The all-new Ford Focus ST, as well as the updated Renaultsport Megane 265 and Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35, are all aiming to be at the top.

However, Vauxhall’s latest contender – the new Astra VXR – is definitely the most promising: it has more power, more torque and more performance-boosting technology than all of its rivals.

Using the curvy three-door Astra GTC as its base, the VXR looks set to turn the most heads, too. A colour-coded front grille, more aggressive front spoiler, LED tail-lights and 19-inch alloy wheels are all standard.

Our car was also fitted with the £995 VXR Aero Pack – an option Vauxhall reckons 85 per cent of customers will specify. The pack includes attention-seeking 20-inch alloys, a biplane rear spoiler and muscular side skirts.

With 276bhp from its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, the Astra VXR has the go to match its considerable show. It covers 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds – and if you’re in any doubt about how fast that is, just consider that a Porsche Boxster completes the same sprint in 5.8 seconds. This is also six tenths of a second quicker than the Focus ST can manage, seven tenths up on a GTI Edition 35 and a tenth faster than the Megane 265.

Those figures only tell half the story. This is a car full of character. Not only is there searing pace throughout the rev range, but the VXR also produces an exhaust note that sounds like nothing else on the road. From inside the cabin, there’s a growl up until about 4,000rpm, when it develops into something more like the rough whoosh of a jet engine. All that performance is more accessible than ever thanks to a clever front suspension set-up borrowed from the Insignia VXR.

The HiPerStrut system helps reduce the amount of torque steer – the sensation that the steering wheel is tugging in your hands as you accelerate – and it works very well. Under most conditions, you can floor the throttle out of a bend and feel totally in control. It’s only when you find some camber that the wheel can sometimes wriggle a bit. But this just adds to the sense that this car is a bit of a hooligan.

Steering which feels alive is something that has become harder to come by as new cars switch to less talkative electric power-steering systems, but the VXR’s electro-hydraulic set-up helps buck the trend. Turn into a corner and, as you hit a bump, the wheel will feed back exactly what’s underneath the front tyres to your hands. It gives you huge amounts of confidence.

And that’s a good thing considering how capable this car is in corners. A lot like the Megane 265, you have to be travelling at really high speeds before the Astra VXR even begins to feel flustered on a twisting, poorly surfaced UK B-road.

The car comes as standard with a limited-slip differential, which helps draw you into the apex of a bend and slingshot you out the other side. The front wheels will eventually lose grip, but switch the Astra’s adaptive dampers to Sport, or even VXR mode, and they seem to grip even harder than before.

So is it all good news? Not quite. The problem is the ride. It’s firm – but not necessarily uncomfortable – in the standard setting, but it becomes even stiffer when you start to explore the Sport and VXR settings. As a result, these are best used occasionally on smooth roads, rather than as standard.

Still, for all its immense performance, the Astra VXR doesn’t do too badly at the pumps. Combined economy is 34.9mpg, and the car emits a reasonable 189g/km of CO2.

So the blow to your wallet won’t be from your road tax bill or even at the filling station; instead, it will come at the dealership. Vauxhall has set the starting price of the VXR at £26,995, and once you add the Aero Pack and VXR Performance Seat Pack fitted to our car, that rises to £28,485.

Almost £30,000 for an Astra will certainly cause some people to think twice, but then a VW Scirocco R – perhaps the most similar car in performance – costs £30,745. That said, one of the most capable vehicles in this class is the Mégane Cup 265. It’s not as well equipped, admittedly, but it costs only £24,840. A Focus ST looks a relative bargain at £21,995.

So if anything stops Vauxhall from selling the 1,200 Astra VXRs every year that it’s hoping to, it will be the price, because there’s certainly nothing wrong with the way it looks or the way it drives.

Viewed simply in those terms, this is the best VXR model that Vauxhall has ever produced – and a genuine contender for a place at the top of this class.

2013 Nissan Sentra SE-R Nismo

2013 Nissan Sentra SE-R Nismo

Nissan is about to introduce a redesign of one of the bread and butter cars for the company. The 2013 Nissan Sentra is to be a versatile vehicle that offers everything from inexpensive means of transportation to spirited drivers car. In this article we look at the performance based rice rocket and determine if Nissan will deliver the goods.

Since Renault owns a 43.4% stake in Nissan and Nissan owns a 15% or Renault means that the two companies are close, like Siamese-Frenchy twins. So therefore they share a lot of the same platforms and what have you. So we might get to see the Renaultsport engines making their way into the 2013 Sentra SE-R. There are two that is the turbo and direct injected 2.0L that both companies have access to. This engine easily produces 265hp like nothing is there so it would certainly make for a tuner friendly vehicle plus you probably could get 300hp easily if Nissan decides not to do it themselves. We would see around a 6 sec 0-60 time that would be on par with the redesigned 240hp VW Golf GTi coming out.

2013 Nissan Sentra SE-R Nismo

Nissan needs to revitalize the Nismo name for cars other than the GT-R and 370Z by letting those engineers tackle the 2013 Sentra, Altima, and upcoming Maxima would certainly put a smile on my face as well as the rest of the Nissan fan boys and girls. With an updated chassis and focus on lighter weight we should see an all around better 2013 Nissan Sentra SE-R Nismo. So look for some stiff competition in this compact performance class. So therefore this would put Nissan in the race for hot hatchbacks around $25k dollars. Expect some stiffer suspension and a nice 6-speed manual or automatic to go along with this ride.

The 2013 Nissan Xterra

The 2013 Nissan Xterra

Over 5 years ago big massive dinosaur SUV’s roamed the land and had quite an ability to go anywhere although they usually roamed around on smooth surfaces. As more and more SUV’s started roaming the land, their food was becoming scarcer and although they were surviving, they were stressed. Then in 2007 a comet of financial burden would crash down and caused many SUV’s to become extinct as their owners could not afford them anymore. Owners wanted a dinosaur that were less destructive and hungry and that’s when all the auto manufacturers started euthanizing the SUV. Today we see that auto manufacturers with the exception of Jeep are executing their SUV’s with extreme prejudice. On the plus side Jeep sales are great and they are thanking all the other manufactures for scrapping their programs.

So what is Nissan to do, they have already turned the Nissan Pathfinder 2013 Model into a nose coned minivan and have Xterra fan boys and girls such as myself that are asking for a continuation of this inexpensive means to outdoor freedom. The problem is that market trends don’t look to hot as everyone either wants a fat-ass 7-passenger minivan crossover thingy or they want a cute little crossover that can’t go off more than a dirt road. So hopefully we will see that there is some life still in the 2013 Nissan Xterra. The Nissan Xterra has been a large seller for Nissan in the past but is not really producing any wow figures. What may save the Xterra is the Frontier. As these two vehicles share everything but a bed (get it) they are pretty much like one vehicle that is just optioned heavily. But Frontier sales have been good to Nissan as it is only second to the Rogue in Nissan truck sales.

The 2013 Nissan Xterra

So hopefully Nissan will go back to the roots of the Xterra and give us a capable off-road vehicle for cheap and startit off with no frills in the interior because we are just going to mount GPS’s, Tilt Gauges, Mag-Light holders and GoPros on the dash anyways. We just need the beefy powertrain and maybe some MPG’s can be squeezed out as well. But look for the Direct Injected 3.7 L to go into this baby and a starting price tag of around $25K.

2015 Ford Mustang Spy Photos

2015 Ford Mustang Spy Photos

Ford has already confirmed that the Ford Mustang for the 2015 model year will have its debut in the next two years. In the launch the 2015 Ford Mustang is expected to be fitted with the existing model’s six- and eight cylinder engines, completed with an EcoBoost four- cylinder engine as well.

It is expected that the next generation Ford Mustang will make use of a greatly reworked model of the previous car’s platform. Unfortunately, the company has not made a final conclusion yet whether the new Mustang will have a solid or independent rear suspension. From its rear photo, a suspension arm is noticeable enough, while the rear wheels is fitted with a heavy amount of camber. The car seems to be shorter in length . The face of the 2015 Ford Mustang will be more likely to be identical to that of the Ford’s latest Evos concept car.

It is possible that the 2015 Ford Mustang will be empowered by the company’s 3.7 liter V6 and 5.0 liter Coyote V8 completed with direct injection. The company also had confirmed about the EcoBoost four- cylinder, yet Ford did not give specifications about it. The company’s 5.0 V8, on the other hand, is a great choice that is able to produce a total output of 420 horses when it is fitted in the Mustang GT.

Some vehicles like the Chevrolet Camaro, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Scion FR- S or Subaru BRZ seem to be appropriate competitors for the 2015 Ford Mustang. Sometime in 2014, Ford will launch the 2015 Mustang and we warn you to be not surprised if the Ford Mustang brings an increased price tag if the independent rear suspension will really go with the 2015 Ford Mustang.

2013 Nissan Altima Offers Competive Mileage To Former Altima Hybrid

2013 Nissan Altima

Nissan may have canceled its Altima Hybrid after having only limited commitment to it, and in light of its enthusiasm for all-electric vehicles, but it also now says its new gasoline-only Altima earns better highway mileage than the hybrid, and just two mpg less combined.

2013 Nissan Altima

Having received EPA certification and reporting its 2013 Altimas are shipping for deliveries later this month, Nissan says the Altima with 2.5-liter four cylinder engine and new Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission will offer 27 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 31 overall. This contrasts with the outgoing 2011 hybrid that was EPA rated at 33 mpg in all three categories.

"This is a huge day for the Nissan brand as we ramp up production and begin shipping the new, fuel-efficient Altimas to our dealers," said Bill Krueger, vice chairman, Nissan Americas. "The new Altima is a game-changer for the mid-size market and our dealers can't wait to share it with our customers."

The new Altimas are being built at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tenn. plant, and production also just began at its second assembly plant in Canton. Miss. Nissan is aiming squarely at the Toyota Camry lineup and has said by year's end, both its plants will be operating three shifts “to maximize production of the country's second best-selling car.”

Nissan is gauging interest from a few indicators including 1.5 million visitors to a dedicated pre-order Web site from which 30,000 have said they are fully interested in the new Altima.

Customers who pre-order through this online venue are being offered free three-year scheduled maintenance which Nissan says is a $700 value.

Features beyond competitive mileage Nissan also promises include:

• Ride comfort, control and fun-to-drive demeanor, including better 0 - 60 mph acceleration than other top-selling mid-size sedans as demonstrated in independent third party testing

2013 Nissan Altima

• Available Next-generation Safety Shield Technologies, including Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Moving Object Detection (MOD) systems using an innovative single rear camera

• Easy-Fill Tire Alert, which sounds the car horn to notify a person filling a tire with air when the tire reaches recommended tire pressure - no gauge needed

• Headlights that automatically switch on when the windshield wipers are in use

• Windshield wipers that park themselves off the windshield when the vehicle is turned off with the wipers on and in mid-cycle

• Premium exterior styling with a powerful presence and improved aerodynamics

• Upscale interior rivaling premium luxury sedans, including NASA-inspired "zero-gravity" seats, an Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display and BOSE® Premium Audio System

2013 Nissan Altima

• Standard Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone system and Streaming Audio via Bluetooth®

• Available NissanConnectSM and NissanConnectSM Navigation with a suite of Bluetooth® phone connectivity features, including hands-free text message integration, Pandora® playback, real-time Google® POI search and more

• Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display with 4-inch color screen standard on every model, which is customizable, easy-to-use and integrates key information right in front of the driver

2013 Nissan Altima

• World-first multi-link rear suspension with connect bushings and Sachs damper to deliver outstanding handling

• Active Understeer Control, which uses advanced electronic stability control algorithms to improve cornering and provide a more confident driving experience

GM Insider Says 2014 Chevy Volt Will Get a New Engine

GM Insider Says 2014 Chevy Volt Will Get a New Engine

Just days after GM might have slightly cannibalized Chevy Volt sales for the next couple of months by announcing a tweaked battery and other updates due in August, an insider reportedly let the cat out of the bag that 2.0-liter turbo engine will be introduced by summer 2013 for the 2014 model.

Since their respective launches, the extended-range electric Volt and Opel/Vauxhall Ampera siblings have relied on an 83-horsepower 1.4-liter generator mated to electric propulsion for a combined 149 horsepower, 273-pound-feet torque. But that four cylinder is “definitely not” going to make it to 2014, according to an anonymous source at GM speaking to Inside EVs.

The 1.4 was reportedly always considered a compromise pressed into service at a time of limited/frozen budgets when GM was undergoing bankruptcy restructuring. If the info leak is correct, the now better-funded company will select for the gasoline portion of the powertrain something closer in general specification to the 260-horsepower, 2.0-liter (GM-sourced) turbo engine Fisker uses in the Karma – although a better-engineered design.

GM Insider Says 2014 Chevy Volt Will Get a New Engine

The 2.0-liter Ecotec Turbo in question – currently rated at between 220-270 horsepower – has “been thoroughly vetted” and “will most likely” be the 2014 replacement, said Inside EVs today.

This more potent powerplant would possibly also call for an upgraded electric motor and the improved gas-electric powertrain would also be used in the pending Cadillac ELR which GM has said will rely on the Volt’s powertrain, and which is positioned as a sleek, high-line corporate halo.

No speculation/news by the GM insider was reported as to possible updates to the 2014 Volt’s battery pack, or what should be specifically expected regarding range, or other performance parameters from the more powerful powertrain.

In any event, since it has also been leaked that the Cadillac ELR will launch in 2014, updating the Volt’s powertrain for that year would make all the more sense to fit with the sporty image portrayed by the extended-range Caddy that would compete with Fisker's six-figure extended-range Karma.

The 2.0-liter Ecotec believed to be in the most-favored status at the moment will be used in the pending Buick Verano as well, and Inside EVs quoted GM Global Chief engineer for Ecotec engines, Mike Anderson, who praised the engine that already sees duty in the Buick Regal GS.

“Our continuously variable valve timing is tuned to work in tandem with direct injection and twin scroll turbocharging to achieve optimum fuel economy, lower emissions, and instant performance when needed,” he said. “Having 295 pound-feet (400 Nm) of torque available over a wide range of engine speeds makes for a very exciting driving experience.”

Of course, if utilized the in the Volt, Ampera siblings, and ELR, the 2.0 Ecotec Turbo engine that was awarded by WardsAuto as one its “10 Best Engines,” would be tuned for use as a generator for the plug-in cars. It nonetheless promises to spice up performance, or it could be optimized to help extend range, or offer a combination of both.

GM Insider Says 2014 Chevy Volt Will Get a New Engine

As would be expected, GM refused to confirm or deny truth of the news leak of the 2014 engine, citing the usual policy of not commenting on future product, so this is officially a rumor until further notice.

The Five-Door up! Ready To Conquer The UK

The Five-Door up! Ready To Conquer The UK

The new five-door Volkswagen up! is now available to order in the UK and is priced £365 ($566) more than the equivalent three-door model.

The five-door up! has the same virtues as its three-door sibling: a 95.27 inches (2.42 m) long wheelbase that makes for impressive interior space despite a diminutive and easy-to-park 139.37 inches (3.54 m) overall vehicle length, an efficient three-cylinder engine, new-to-the-class safety features and an innovative infotainment system.

Rear passengers in the five-door up! benefit from exactly the same space as those in the three-door model. The rear seat base is set slightly higher than that in the front, giving passengers a clearer view of the road ahead.

The five-door range mirrors that of the three-door, with a choice of Take up!, Move up! and High up!
models, plus the special edition up! Black and up! White. Five-door models are expected to make up just over half of all up! sales.

The Five-Door up! Ready To Conquer The UK

As with the three-door, two BlueMotion Technology versions will also be available, offering sub-100 g/km CO2 emissions. This is a big deal in the UK as it allows the car to be exempt from a special VED eco tax.

The 60 PS Move up! BlueMotion Technology returns 68.9 mpg on the combined cycle, and the 75 PS High up! BlueMotion Technology offers 67.3 mpg.

A fully electric version will join the range in late 2013, and an automated manual gearbox will become optional later in 2012.

The up! is the World Car of the Year 2012, What Car? Car of the Year for 2012, and has also been named TopGear magazine’s Small Car of the Year.

UK deliveries of the five-door up! are expected to start in August.

Lexus GS450h F Sport

You only have to look at the popularity of the Audi S line or BMW M Sport models to see that sporty premium cars are big business. Lexus has obviously been paying attention, too, as a new F Sport trim level has been introduced on the latest GS.

The changes from the standard car start with the way the GS F Sport looks: the familiar narrow headlights and sharp lines remain, but the F Sport rides on 19-inch alloys rather than 18s and gets an even more aggressive grille and more pronounced bumpers.

Inside, there’s a selection of familiar Lexus features, such as leather on the doors and seats, with a perforated F-Sport leather steering wheel and gearstick.

These are backed up by high-quality fit, finish and feel. There have been improvements to the mouse controller, which loses its side buttons in favour of a smarter ‘push to select’ set-up, while both front and rear occupants get more room compared to the old car.

Similarly, repositioning the hybrid’s batteries has increased boot space by an impressive 55 per cent, taking the total to 465 litres.

The much-improved interior also features the world’s largest in-car display as its centrepiece. This optional 12.3-inch display is an evolution of the existing Lexus set-up, but is clearer and easier to read. The GS has a head-up display, too, showing speed, revs and gear, but it looks dated.

Push the start button and the silence of the updated hybrid drivetrain is all that greets you, but pull away into traffic, press the accelerator harder and the 3.5-litre V6 fires in to life.

The power sources produce a combined 338bhp, which means a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds and seriously impressive in-gear performance. There is one let-down though, and that’s the transmission. It’s a CVT box, with steering wheel shift paddles, but whether you leave it in Drive or change gears yourself, it takes the edge off refinement, causing the revs to rise noisily.

The good news is that the hybrid powertrain is genuinely clean, with CO2 emissions cut from 179g/km to 141g/km and fuel economy improved by 23 per cent to 45.6mpg.

The most significant F Sport upgrade over the regular GS concerns its suspension. The standard car is already better to drive than its predecessor, as it’s lighter and stiffer, but the F gets an additional Sports Plus mode on top of the Eco, Normal and Sports settings offered across the line-up. This adds a quicker and more responsive setting for the electric set-up, but we felt the steering could do with more feel in all modes.

The F-Sport model also gets rear-wheel steering. This aids both high-speed stability and parking in tight spaces around town. Add in adaptive dampers and you have all the makings of a genuine sports saloon. Yet this is still a luxury car with a comfortable ride.

An Audi A6 or a BMW 5 Series – the latter with some optional chassis gadgets – will offer a better driving experience, but this new GS is appealing in its ability to play a number of roles.
