Lower Insurance for EV Drivers?


Although they cost more to buy or lease than internal combustion engine equivalents, electric vehicles not only save in operation costs, it appears insurance premiums can be less as well.

According to Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director of Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com, EV owners are considered to be a careful bunch, more mature. 

“They’re not the twenty something male who gets into the most fights and has the most car accidents.”
However, given that EVs still represent a tiny fraction of the overall passenger car market, it can be hard to gauge exactly what sort of premiums should be charged for operating one.

Nonetheless, as electric vehicles proliferate, so do insurance policies designed to cover them, leading to a growing level of competition. Hartford Insurance is seizing an opportunity to win over EV buyers, by providing a five percent discount nationwide.

As for the reason, Hartford is saying this because driving an EV shows support for sustainability, although the greater degree of cautiousness among electric vehicle motorists seems to be an underlying theme.

One Chevy Volt owner in correspondence with others said, “we [all] seem to be less hurried about driving.”

According to Edmunds.com, the estimated average annual premium for a Volt in the first five years of ownership is approximately $1,452, compared to a car such as the Cadillac CTS, with costs around $2,024 per year. It’s a similar saving scenario for the Nissan Leaf, which costs around $1,500 to insure annually; by comparison, a mid-size Maxima sedan is over $1,800.

Yet there is a flipside to this. Due to the level of technology employed in cars such as EVs and plug-in hybrids, some insurance companies are charging higher premiums than regular vehicles, based on the projected costs of repairs.

A spokesperson for insurance company Progressive; Brittany Senary, said “because newer vehicles with more expensive technology and parts [such as EVs] generally cost more to fix, they’re generally more expensive to insure. We [Progressive] don’t offer discounts because we cannot justify them based on our claims data.”

Neste Pro Diesel is Said to Lower Emissions by up to 20 Percent


In Finland, Neste Oil is getting ready to launch a new type of diesel fuel. Developed from extensive R&D work and experience gathered from fuel usage worldwide, the new diesel complies with ultra strict Category 4 specifications (a maximum of 840 kilograms/per cubic meter), which form part of the Worldwide Fuel Charter, created by auto manufacturers in Asia, Europe and the U.S.

Formulated to work with advanced emissions control systems, including particulate filters, Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and sophisticated downstream exhaust injection; Neste Pro Diesel is said to offer the best fuel product properties on the market.

According to a press release, tests, conducted at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, as well as the Tampere University of Applied Science, in addition to Neste’s own Motor Laboratory have yielded a reduction in fuel consumption of five percent, regardless of which vehicle uses the new diesel.

Additionally, due to the inclusion of NExBTL or HVO (a 100 percent hydrocarbon fuel), Neste Pro Diesel can also reduce a single vehicle’s greenhouse gas emissions by 10 to 20 percent. The fuel will be used for the first time publicly during this year’s Neste Rally Finland, with actual pump availability slated to commence across the country this fall. No word yet on availability in other markets.

The question is, will the introduction of this new fuel help further the cause of diesel technology as a worthy alternative to electric, fuel cell and even bio fuel programs? In the U.S., given that (unlike Europe) the emphasis on future vehicle propulsion is currently very much on EVs it’s probably too early to tell. Yet if (as with this program), closer cooperation between auto manufacturers and fuel companies to reduce emissions and boost fuel economy is any indication, there’s a good chance that it might, even in our market.

Germany Invades With Gifts In Hand

Companies such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have had a love-hate relationship with the American auto industry and have been given and taken away vehicles. Taking away one man’s German wagon is a good way to cause an apoplectic fit amongst year gear heads. So in this article we will look at the best vehicle for hoarders (wagons) as well as the other vehicles coming ashore such as diesels. For me, I prefer diesel vehicles that can run off of French fry oil so I don’t have to support the corporate oil man (as much). I keep reading about awesome German diesel vehicles such as the new BMW 5-series diesels that can go up to 1000 miles on a tank of gas making a great long distance gumball rally racer that would be strong enough to take on that pesky Burt Reynolds and Don DeLuise duo. Since you efficiency the top forward for 2012 car buyers, hopefully we will see the Germans running a full beach assault with diesels and diesel wagons. The companies have invested heavily in order to make their diesel engines remarkably clean and low emitting of Capt. Planet power reduction gases.

As for German vehicles that offer more room you are not stupid crossover vehicles, we shall see wagons getting reintroduced into the wild. BMW is bringing the 3-series wagon with its 3.0L in-line six engine with the option for an 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual and will produce somewhere around 300 horsepower and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. There will be a little less efficiency for the manual as well as the all-wheel-drive version. As for Audi we will see both the 2013 Audi Allroad and S4 coming to our shores with hunchbacks. Of course the Audi Allroad will have the 2.0 L turbo that is an absolutely everything of Volkswagen and Audi but there also be much more powerful versions especially for the Audi S4.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Highlights Android's Tablet Problem [REVIEW]

Is the large-size Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 a worthy iPad alternative? With its 10.1-inch screen, this is the Samsung tablet that competes most directly with Apple's flagship "post PC" product. And with a price $100 cheaper than the entry-level iPad (for the same 16GB of storage), the $400 Tab is certainly a temptress for tablet buyers.

In tablet society, though, Samsung and Android have a thinner pedigree than the iPad, and it shows in the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. While the tablet will certainly please anyone who just wants a decent screen for checking out Netflix videos, the tablet falls short in many key features -- notably, the screen.

To be clear, the new Tab is a fine Android tablet. Running version 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" out of the box on a dual-core 1GHz processor and sporting a 1,280 x 800 display, Samsung's latest toy has a lot to brag about. But when you're talking tablets, you simply can't ignore the iOS elephant in the room. Any tablet up for sale doesn't just have to convince buyers it's worthy of their cash -- it has to show why it's more worthy than the iPad.

It's a fair argument to say, that since the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is priced at $400, it's really competing with the repositioned iPad 2, which now costs the same. But even putting aside the Retina display, better camera and faster processor in the latest Apple tablet, the experience on the Tab 2 (and most Android tablets) is generally a poor substitute for what you get from an iPad.

First of all, the tablet is hampered by the classic Android problem of a lack of good tablet support for many apps. Even mainstream apps like Twitter and Facebook still have stretched-out user interfaces that are more suited to a smaller phone screen. Forget the extremely visual layouts in, say, the eBay app for iPad, and forget running Hulu Plus at all (it doesn't yet offer support for Samsung's latest tabs).

The issue isn't limited to apps. Using the browser, many sites (including Mashable) took me straight to the mobile version, even though the Tab's 10.1-inch screen is more than enough to take on full web pages.

All these "is it a phone or a tablet?" issues, of course, are a symptom of Android's fragmentation problem. With so many devices out there -- all with different screens, processors and software -- few sites or apps are ready for every possible device. Still, that's not the buyer's problem.

Samsung has some tricks that help it stand out from the Android pack, though. Like its little 7-inch brother, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has an infrared blaster so you can use the tablet as a remote control. Paired with an pre-installed app called Peel, the tablet can configure itself to control your TV and other gear just by tapping a few virtual buttons.

At least in theory. In practice, the process is much less nimble, and Peel stumbled badly on the first "activity" I attempted to set up. After successfully turning my Pioneer receiver on and off, it then attempted to switch inputs on it, but couldn't. Worse yet, the app offered no way to skip the step without contacting technical support. I abandoned the process at this point, something I expect the majority of customers would do, too.
Samsung also offers one-stop shopping for movies, music and games right from the home screen. Although when I say "offers," I should really say "thrusts your face in front of." The large Samsung storefront widgets that appear on the screen by default highlight exactly what's wrong with Android, though at least they're easily deleted.

On pure performance, the Galaxy Tab 2 is a trooper. It performed well in benchmarks, besting most of the phones we've reviewed lately and leaving the original iPad in the dust. Still, it didn't quite beat the iPad 2, and the iPad 3 blew it away. In terms of real-world use, I found there was a slight lag after some finger taps and motion wasn't quite as fluid as I'd like, but I'm now used to the iPad 3.

At the end of the day, if you're in the market for a tablet, you could do a lot worse than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. It's a solid performer, and the bright widescreen display is tailor-made for things like watching HD video. But until app developers rise to the challenge of fully supporting Android tablets -- and Google gets its fragmentation problem under control -- tablets such as the Tab 2 will never make enough noise to be heard over the stampede of customers trampling their way toward the nearest Apple Store.

The United States and a Natural Gas Future

Whenever corn ethanol was being introduced I figured, wow this is amazing. If we can harness the same amount of energy that Brazil is harnessing from sugarcane then we should be turning Wichita Kansas into Abu Dhabi. Before too long corn farmers would be as wealthy as oil sheiks. But as we found out that corn ethanol is nowhere near as efficient as sugarcane ethanol, in fact our government has spent billions in farm subsidies in order to try and boost the production of corn ethanol. What makes you a little bit nauseous is that if that money would’ve been spent giving auto manufacturers incentives to produce compressed natural gas vehicles as well as building up an infrastructure of compressed natural gas. This would be giving drivers for both commercial and noncommercial uses the ability to refuel the vehicles at nearly every major gas station. The government could have also offered incentives to gas stations in order to entice the stations to place a compressed natural gas pumps at their location. It would have a major impact being seen today instead of continuing on a path of trying to save an inefficient fuel alternative.

Currently there are compressed natural gas kits available for vehicles online. As we look at the kits that are available see that not that many items are needed in order to convert your vehicle to a duel fuel vehicle. So if auto manufacturers would design a small tank they could fit in a current vehicle then that vehicle could have a range of say 40-50 miles on a tank of CNG which would give commuters the ability to run entirely off of compressed natural gas during the week and on long drives they could simply just switch over to conventional gasoline. And with natural gas costing so much less the gallon gasoline savings would certainly entice buyers to purchase CNG equipped vehicles.

For commercial uses, I would certainly be fitting my delivery vehicles with compressed natural gas especially for companies like FedEx and UPS where the vehicles have to pick up packages from the distribution center means they could also have a compressed natural gas filling up the vehicles and with costs of about one fourth that of gasoline means the companies would save a fortune in the long-term.

It simply food for thought but I personally think that Americans would have so much to gain with compressed natural gas as it would be supplied by us and help save Americans thousands of dollars each year in fuel prices. The iPhone 5 Might Look Like This

The iPhone 5 is rumored to be coming later this year, with an official announcement expected in June around Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC).
Based on some of the latest rumors regarding the phone and what we can expect, one artist, Jon Fawcett, created some concept pictures of what he thinks Apple's newest iPhone will look like when it hits store shelves.

Rumor has it that the next version of the iPhone will be made of LiquidMetal. A mix of several different metals, LiquidMetal could allow the phone to be more durable. Light like plastic but durable like aluminum, it would also allow the phone to weigh less and have a thinner profile.

Measuring at 4.14" x 2.25", Fawcett's concept phone is just 7mm thick and has a 4-inch widescreen multitouch display. The phone has a 10-megapixel rear-facing camera, 5-megapixel forward-facing cam for video chatting, and quad speakers for listening to tunes or watching videos in both portrait and landscape mode.

Fawcett isn't affiliated with Apple in any way, and doesn't really know what the newest version of the phone will look like -- the pictures, however, are pretty impressive and can offer a glimpse at what might potentially be in store for us later this year.

Beyond aesthetics, the newest iPhone is also rumored to have updated specs under the hood, including a faster processor and NFC capabilities.

With Apple in, Dow would have set record long ago

Apple is the world's most valuable company. The Dow Jones industrial average is probably the world's best-known stock index. So don't they deserve each other? 
Consider this: If Apple had been added to the Dow in June 2009, the last time there were serious rumors that it would happen, the average would be about 2,500 points higher than it is today and well above its all-time high.

Paul Hickey of Bespoke Investment Group, which crunches numbers about the markets, says the Dow would be at 15,360, about 1,200 points above its record of 14,164, set in October 2007. The Dow closed Wednesday at 12,835.

Not only would investors be perkier, but everyday Americans watching the Dow set one record after another would probably feel wealthier. That might inspire them to spend more money and help the economy grow faster.

But if you think the time is right for an Apple-Dow marriage, don't check your mailbox for a wedding invitation. Apple, which redefined how people listen to music and reinvented the cellphone, is simply too hot for the Dow.

In 2009, when a bankrupt General Motors and a hobbled Citigroup were booted from the Dow and Apple was talked about as one replacement, Apple stock traded at about $144.

On Wednesday, it closed at $569. Because of how the Dow is calculated, Apple would dwarf the other stocks in the average and distort the Dow from its purpose — which is to reflect the broad economy, not represent the hottest stocks.

A big one-day gain by Apple, like a $50 jump after it reported blockbuster earnings last month, would send the Dow higher by hundreds of points. Similarly, a big drop would suggest the market was in more trouble than it really was.

The Dow comprises 30 stocks. It is weighted so that a $1 move by any stock, no matter how cheap or expensive, moves the average the same — about seven and a half points as the Dow is calculated today.
Because it's much easier for a $100 stock to move $1 than it is for a $20 stock, higher-priced stocks carry more importance. IBM, at about $200, is the most expensive stock and carries nearly 12 percent of the Dow's weight.

Apple would carry a quarter or more, depending on which stock it replaced. That is why the Dow would be thousands of points higher if it had welcomed Apple in 2009: Each share of Apple has grown by hundreds of dollars since then.

"It wouldn't be the Dow Jones industrial average," says Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group. "It would be the Apple Plus Some Other Stuff Index."

Apple is already the biggest component of the other two major U.S. stock indexes: It makes up nearly 12 percent of the Nasdaq composite and more than 4 percent of the Standard & Poor's 500.

The Dow was born in 1896 and has changed over the years to reflect the changing economy. Agricultural and coal companies have been replaced by banks and drug companies. Car makers have knocked off railroads.

Of the Dow's 12 original stocks, only General Electric is still part of the index. So why not add Apple, which has enormous cultural pull and admiration throughout corporate America — plus a market value of half a trillion dollars?

"We don't run the Dow as we would an investment portfolio," says John Prestbo, the executive editor of Dow Jones Indexes, which maintains the Dow and other indexes.

Prestbo, along with the managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and the research head of the CME Group, which owns a majority stake of Dow Jones Indexes, decide which companies make up the Dow.
They meet occasionally to discuss whether they need to change the index. The CME Group provides benchmark indexes on investments like agricultural products, energy and metals.

The Dow committee might boot a company if it's no longer an industry leader, or if its industry is too heavily represented. Sometimes companies will ask to be included, which doesn't necessarily hurt or help their case, Prestbo says.

Three years ago, when GM and Citigroup got the ax, the group snubbed Apple and chose Cisco Systems, which makes computer networking equipment, and Travelers Companies, the insurance provider.
Travelers is up almost 50 percent since it was added to the Dow, but Cisco has moved slightly lower. In the hypothetical example provided by Bespoke, Apple would have replaced Cisco in 2009.

There's some history behind the idea of having the most valuable company be part of the Dow. Exxon Mobil, which held the title until Apple wrested it in January, is a Dow member. Ten years ago, two Dow components, Microsoft and GE, jockeyed for the honor.

But Prestbo brushes off the what-if questions about Apple. Would the Dow be higher? Sure, he says. "But it also wouldn't be tracking the market."

Huawei gearing up to take on Cisco on its home turf

n">(Reuters) - Huawei's head of research and development in North America said his company is more than ready to take on larger rival Cisco Systems but noted it will take some patience -- and time.

"The U.S. is by far our most complex market ... for us our entrance into the U.S. is similar to a western company entering China," John Roese said in an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of IT infrastructure conference Interop in Las Vegas.

For a decade, China-based Huawei with U.S. headquarters in Plano, Texas, has been selling infrastructure to U.S. telecom operators. It sells routers and switches that move data through networks and devices such as modems and smartphones, but now it aims to provide equipment to large businesses, a market dominated by Cisco Systems.

Huawei in September of last year launched its enterprise unit and aims to generate $15 billion worldwide in revenue by 2015. This year it sees deals totaling more than $7 billion worldwide and expects to invest $4.5 billion in research and development.

The enterprise unit provides equipment such as hubs, routers and switches that run networks transferring data across corporations.

"We basically said it will take a few years to get to critical mass but the U.S. is not critical to our revenue objective," Roese said.

Huawei's enterprise unit revenue rose 57.1 percent in 2011 to 9.16 billion yuan ($1.45 billion), making it the fastest growing division though it contributes only 4.5 percent of total revenue.

Roese, a technology veteran who has worked at Nortel, Broadcom, Enterasys and Cabletron, said the company had not publicly set any financial goals for the U.S. market but he made it clear that Huawei has what it takes to be a formidable rival to Cisco in the United States.

Cisco is the world's leading maker of networking gear.

"There really has not been a legitimate major competitor for Cisco for a long time ... and in comes Huawei and we are not a small player," Roese said.

Cisco's Chief Executive John Chambers has repeatedly called Huawei its toughest rival in the enterprise market and promised to be compete aggressively.

In 2003, Cisco sued Huawei for allegedly infringing on some of its patents. Huawei removed the contested parts and the case was dropped.

ANNOUNCES NEW DEALS
Cisco's executive vice president Rob Lloyd implied that Huawei was still imitating and not innovating and questioned its security credentials:

"We clearly know that our customers view innovation from Cisco and they don't see the same from Huawei. We would clearly say that imitation isn't innovation," Lloyd said on the company's earnings call this past Tuesday.

"The privacy of information, how data is protected is forefront in our customers' mind in a cloud centric world. That's not the forte of Huawei," Lloyd also said.

Roese shrugged off the comments.

"If they want to declare us public enemy No 1 and their biggest threat, I am glad to take that compliment," Roese said, adding that currently Huawei was still too small a player in the U.S. to compete with Cisco.
But it's certainly gearing up to take on Cisco.

Huawei this week announced its first U.S. distribution agreement with IT-distributor Synnex that will allow it to expand its presence in the U.S. enterprise market

It is also launching new products that compete with Cisco's telepresence offerings and network switches.
Still, the United States has been a difficult market for Huawei to crack as some U.S. politicians are wary of the company's secretive founder and Chief Executive Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese military officer. There are also concerns regarding the security of its hardware.

Roese said Huawei was currently not doing business with the U.S. federal government or the financial services market.

"We have to get a few things behind us before we can sell to the federal government," Roese said.
Huawei has been at pains to overcome national security concerns in the U.S. and was dealt a fresh blow this week when the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee adopted legislation that included a measure to root out any technology produced by Huawei in the United States nuclear weapons complex.
Roese added that it did not have the necessary distribution channels needed to serve the financial services industry yet.

The company is focused on supplying businesses in the health care industry and education sector with its products such as telepresence equipment and data center switches, Roese said.

"We are definitely in a building phase and we are very patient," Roese said and quipped that thanks to Cisco the company was at least getting some free advertisement.

The Porsche Macan 2014

Porsche looks to be introducing an entry-level SUV for its lineup. The vehicle shares similar designs to the Cayenne and Panamera. Since Porsche has had relative success with both models of vehicles and has the powertrain on standby thanks to the Audi Q5, it’s no surprise that Porsche would introduce the three together with a few bottles of wine and leave them be until nine months later when the Porsche Macan would be birthed. So is this Porsche Macan going to be treated as a bastard child with the public?

Porsche is looking to target the small luxury SUV category is also shared by vehicles such as the Land Rover Evoque. The Porsche Macan 2014 will start out at a price competitive to the Evoque at around $44,000 USD. The Macan will also more than likely utilize the same engine used in the Audi Q5 which will be the 2.0T that is used in everything from VW A.G. and will be the base engine that will likely push around 240 hp for starters. This will probably get the Macan around 28 mpg on the highway. The next engine will be 3.2 L that will deliver around 280 hp and around 23-24 mpg on the highway. The Porsche Macan S might get the Supercharged 3.0 L that throws down 333 hp and around the same mpg’s if you can keep your foot off the pedal, which you can’t.

The Porsche Macan 2014 will also utilize the Quattro all-wheel drive system and with a supercharged 3.0 L should make this little SUV fly your children to soccer practice. Because I personally hate the Cayenne and Panamera with a passion you would think that I would hate this but I honestly am neutral with this one. The problem that I do see is that this vehicle will cost more for the name. I will be interested to see what the base model comes with as far as amenities goes. But I am sure this little SUV crossover will be seen driving around every suburb and college very soon.

10 000hp for 100 meters

Tractor pulling is still a relatively unknown sport, only few know that this is the worlds most powerful motorsport. Essentially the sport involves heavily modified tractors pulling a sledge down a 100 meter course to see who gets the furthest. The sledge becomes heavier as they progress and there is a variety of classes for all sorts of tractors.

 The unlimited class tractors can produce figures of 10 000hp and more. Some tractors feature 5 Supercharged V8's glued together, whilst others feature 3 turbine engines that were once used to power military helicopters. There are even radial engines and ship engines! These monstrous machines are a sight to behold. Think they Veyron is powerful? HAHAHAHAHAHA.


The GTA Spano

Spain is a country that I tend not to think of when I picture a supercar pedigree emerging, but hey even Brazil has kicked out a few sweet supercars. So when I first learned of the Spano I was skeptical. It looked great in the pictures but I was wondering if it was based on outdated designs using off the shelf technology that would produce mediocre results and cost too much. And was I wrong.

Well it’s certainly not cheap so I did get that right as the Spano is around 900k USD but if Spain and Greece keep at it that maybe a lot cheaper for Americans, but my goodness does this vehicle have some fun trinkets. First off the chassis that I thought would be built out of pot metal and seashells is actually a woven blend of carbon-fiber, titanium, and Kevlar honeycomb. So you get a space age rocket submarine chassis that’s bulletproof, sweet! Using these sexy materials makes the Spano weigh in at less than 3,000 lbs. So ok we have a pretty light vehicle but what SEAT little stupid engine did they put in it. A supercharged 8300cc V-10 engine that produces around 820 horsepower and 840 hp if you use bio-ethenol thus making it quite the heart of a Spano Spaniard. So the transmission is probably a 4-speed taken from a broken down SEAT right? No it’s a 7-speed transmission that helps push this beautiful baby to over 200 mph. Ok so the engine and chassis are sweet, what about brakes. I bet the brakes are made out of lead and cardboard. Nope, massive 380 mm carbon ceramic fade-resistant rotors mated to a pneumatic assisted ABS system to bring this Cocker Spano to a halt very quickly. So what about the interior, it is probably similar to the insides of a burro pulled cart? No it’s actually set up like a race car and has lit touch sensitive buttons that make you feel that if you press the wrong one the vehicle will then turn into a lightcycle.

The GTA Spano is a true thoroughbred supercar as it can go from 0-62 in 2.9 seconds. The top speed is not known but I do know that I would certainly drive this. Would I buy it if I had nearly a million to blow on a car, probably not due to the fact that I would be checking out a Koenigsegg and Zonda first. I do have to hand it to the Spaniards and their GTA Spano as it certainly made me shut up about supercars coming from Spain. Now I have another reason other than your beautiful women to visit your country.

The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

For 2013 Hyundai has come out swinging at auto manufacturers such as Honda and Toyota, and the company plans to dethrone the king’s of foreign imports. As we look at the Hyundai lineup we see that nearly every single vehicle that they produce targets their Japanese rivals. It looks as though Hyundai had told their engineers that if they did a good job designing all the boring cars and they would get a fun rear wheel drive project. As a result we were given the Hyundai Genesis coupe. The Genesis coupe looks to be competing against a few vehicles depending on engine choices such as the Nissan 370 Z as well as the Ford Mustang V6 2013 and GT and more. My only issue with the Hyundai Genesis is the fact that I’m still not sold on the exterior looks of the vehicle. The front of the car reminds me of some wacky Japanimation where the car is screaming through the air while epileptic flashes of light have it surrounded. I do believe that the 2013 Hyundai Genesis coupe, with its updated front fascia certainly looks better than the previous model but I do believe there are some better looking vehicles that it has to compete with. Hyundai also updated the interior design with new materials making for an overall better quality feel. One thing I do like about Hyundai and especially the Genesis coupe is the fact that the company is doing it right by offering engine designs and power output that make for a fun driving experience.

I expected the four-cylinder 2013 Hyundai Genesis coupe to continue on from the previous model but I was pleasantly surprised to see the they upped the horsepower by 64 and the torque by 52 lb-ft making for a total of 274 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. The engineers what about doing this by adding a 53% larger intercooler as well as a new twin scroll Turbo charger that delivers maximum torque at 2000 RPM making for a spirited drive. This certainly helps out the vehicle when cornering as well as launching as this isn’t exactly the lightest vehicle as it weighs in just under 3500 pounds. For the V6 is an impressive direct injected block of aluminum wizardry as it produces 348 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. With this engine the Genesis coupe is certainly a card that you can get tail happy in plus both engines get fairly decent gas mileage therefore if you can keep your foot off the pedal you can actually afford another set of tires you’ll soon be burning off.

Word on the street is that Hyundai engineers have been fooling around with some superchargers for the V6 in the 2013 Hyundai Genesis coupe and the 5.0 V-8 in the Genesis sedan. If this is true we may see a performance line Genesis or a dealer option add-on kind of like Toyota does with their TRD superchargers. It said that the V6 Genesis coupe supercharged made around 450 hp which would certainly make a viable threat to other vehicles on the street plus you get a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty to live it up.

The Worst Custom Car

I love custom cars and I love it when somebody takes an ordinary car and makes it into a work of art. In this article we look at beauty that seems to only be held in the eye of the beholder. When custom car shows such as SEMA come along I get excited to see what creations will be shown that accentuate the artistic abilities of custom car designers. On the other hand there are about five putrid custom cars for each good one. Since there are so many distasteful modifications being done it makes me feel as though I am the one lacking the taste. It’s one thing to be young and want to make your car unique to your taste yet you don’t have the funds to do so. I don’t however understand why you have cheap fiberglass ground effects that chip and break before you ever get primer on them. What I do love is seeing massive rear wing spoilers pushing down the backend of a front-wheel-drive car. As we all know Honda Civics and Acura Integras are known for the ass end lifting off the ground around 55 mph in the mall parking lot.
Most people set a stereotype to each car owner and modification done but the more I look into it I realize that every race on this planet has individuals that properly customize their vehicles by using quality parts and then there’s the side of the race that gets all their custom parts from AutoZone. My issue is that I am a stickler for quality workmanship. One of my first jobs was being the peon at an auto body shop and when we did custom work it took massive amounts of time and effort but the final product was always well worth the blood, sweat and two years. So let’s take a look at some epic fails amongst custom car designs.
As we see there are plenty of bad decisions when it comes to customizing one’s vehicle and some of them almost seem as though it’s a practical joke; and I have even made the mistake of treating one as a practical joke and laughing with the owner but as my laughing caused more veins to pop out of the owners forehead I soon realized that he looked at the vehicle and actually planned for it to look like garbage.

Toyota 86 available in South Africa soon


The Toyota 86 is expected in South Africa in July 2012 and updates Toyota’s model lineup to feature a model with a bit more sportiness and excitement.

The rear wheel drive sports car features a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder boxer motor up front and is said to be made purely for driving enjoyment. In case you were wondering, this is almost an identical car to the Subaru BRZ, which just has a different badge stuck on it.

The GT86 or the 86 as it will be known in South Africa is a simplistic approach to realistic motoring conditions and should provide much enjoyment in the urban jungle. I think it has the potential to be a fantastic car, but lets see what they are priced at first.

The Almighty 2014 Toyota Supra

Remember how ever since the death of the Acura NSX every car magazine would print out a column each year claiming that it was in the works. Well the same thing goes for the Toyota Supra but for gear heads as it was a car that we dreamt about yet it was actually somewhat affordable. The 2JZ 6-cylinder was a masterpiece of reliable and rock solid engineering. Tuners would boost the engine to ridiculous amounts of power without having to tear into the engines bottom end. If that wasn’t enough, these same drivers used them to drive the family around day in and day out. Then Toyota did something that made us all die a little inside and discontinued production of the Supra and had no plans to reintroduce one. The engineering team then started focusing and revamping what we have today as the almost unavailable Lexus LF-A. It’s not the fastest in its class but I would certainly choose it over the rest.
After receiving word of the LF-A, our ears perked up as to say, wow they still believe in building something powerful and exciting. Then we started getting word on the joint project with Subaru that would introduce the Toyota FT-86. This car is a breath of fresh air because it brings sportiness and great handling to the masses and offers a H-4 2.0L that will be a tuners playground. So it seems that Toyota is getting back into the game and now it looks like they are working on a 2014 Toyota Supra that will fit quite nicely between the FT-86 and LF-A. With Nissan’s amazing GT-R and Acura introducing the 2014 NSX SH-AWD we are once again getting into a foreign sports car pissing contest where we the customers win. It looks like all-wheel-drive is the performance car choice and it seems that Toyota may go the same route as Acura with a rear-wheel-drive platform that is powered by a gas engine while the front wheels get their power from torque happy electric motors.
As for the 2014 Toyota Supra price tag that is still up in the air. It will more than likely be priced around the GT-R as it looks to compete with. Either way look for some design queues from the LF-A and FT-86 in this vehicle. Godspeed Toyota on making the 2014 Toyota Supra as I am sure we will have a track monster on our hands. If there is any upcoming news we will be sure to be posting it ASAP as this is a vehicle near and dear to our hearts.

Windows 8 Release Preview Set for Early June

The latest pre-release version of the Windows 8 operating system will become available during the first week of June, a Microsoft executive said Tuesday in Tokyo.

The Windows 8 "Release Preview" will be the most complete version to date of the upcoming version of the operating system, said Steven Sinofsky, President of Windows and Windows Live Division. He spoke at Microsoft's Windows Developer Days, an event to teach developers about Windows 8.

Microsoft has said that Windows 8 will be released this year, with media reports saying it will be launched in October.
June's Release Preview of the OS could possibly be followed by more pre-release versions, according to Microsoft Japan spokesman Masaki Ida. Typically a release candidate is a time-limited version of an operating system that's nearly complete and is shared with the public as a final test.

Microsoft released a Developer Preview of Windows 8 last year, and then a Consumer Preview in February. The latest version had notable performance issues, including with its touch interface.

Windows 8 will come in four official versions: Home, Pro and Enterprise for PCs with x86 processors, and Windows 8 RT for tablets and other devices with ARM processors.

The current version of the OS, Windows 7, was released to the general public in October 2009.

Mazda Mileage Mania

Yes, it can. The technology is already developed and could possibly be in the works if not already into production. Mazda is a company of unorthodox innovations and as we see with their current lineup they will do well for themselves. The reason being is that Mazda has some very innovative and intelligent engineers on their team and have already found ways to deliver 35 mpg from a gas powered non-hybrid crossover which is much better than the Honda CR-V that delivers 31. The reason Mazda can do this is thanks to their stance on what they have dubbed SKYACTIV. Yes it seems as though no one can spell these days and Mazda is no exception.

The Mazda Motor Company has worked to deliver engine designs that shed unnecessary weight as well as utilize higher geared transmissions in order to keep the engine at lower revs constantly. This technology coupled with a light weight chases makes the vehicle an efficient one. But 35 mpg is only half of 70 mpg. So how is Mazda going to be able to manage 70 mpg with the CX-5? The answer is French Fries. Ok not French fries but the oil that cooks them as it can be burnt in a diesel engine. Yes Mazda makes a CX-5 diesel that is selling surprisingly well in Japan as it is delivering 62 mpg on the highway. The engine is dubbed the SKYACTIV-D and is mated to Mazda’s 6-speed transmission.

The answer is the Mazda i-STOP and Mazda i-ELOOP. i-STOP is a stop-start process that is currently used with the Japanese edition Mazda diesel but if we add it to i-ELOOP we should see a the diesel engine able to shed all its accessories except an alternator. The Mazda i-ELOOP uses capacitors to store energy from regenerative braking that can power the electric power steering, A/C compressor and even an electric turbocharger thus delivering some fantastic numbers for the CX-5 as more of the engines power is placed to the wheels and has less resistance. So we know that Mazda has the technology but will they implement it?
